Getting your marriage license in Tennessee is more straightforward than most couples expect, but a few details trip people up, so here's exactly how it works.
Both of you need to appear together in person at any county clerk's office in TN. It doesn't have to be in the same county you're planning to get married in. Bring a valid driver's license, passport, or other government-issued photo ID, plus proof of your Social Security number, like your card, a W-2, or a tax document.
The license costs $99.50 in cash or $101.49 by card (no checks). If you complete a notarized premarital counseling certificate beforehand, you get a $60 discount, bringing it down to $39.50 cash. There's no waiting period in Tennessee, so you can get your license and get married the same day if you want to.
Once you arrive, you'll fill out an application (some counties let you do this online ahead of time), show your IDs, and pay. The clerk's office will hand you back an envelope, and at that point, you're done. You can look inside if you're curious, just make sure to put everything back. Your officiant needs it all.
Here's the part that matters most for planning: your license is valid for 30 days from the date it's issued. Your ceremony has to happen within that window, so don't apply too early.
