Planning Your Elopement

Venue or Free Public Spot? How to Choose Where to Elope

By Wes Howard ยท Nashville Wedding Officiant

One of the first questions couples ask is whether they should book a venue or just show up at a beautiful free spot and say their vows. There's no wrong answer here. It really comes down to what matters most to you on the day.

A paid venue like Mint Springs Farm, CJ's Off the Square, or The Bridge Building gives you exclusive access for your ceremony window. No strangers wandering through your photos, no waiting for another event to clear out, and usually a rain plan already built in, whether that's a covered pavilion, an indoor room, or a flexible reschedule policy. Many venues also come with extras already in place, like chairs, an arbor, and a dressing room, plus a backdrop that's been designed to photograph beautifully. That convenience comes with a rental fee, and it varies quite a bit by property.

A free public spot like Percy Warner Park, Centennial Park, or Ellington Agricultural Center costs nothing to visit and offers some of the most photogenic scenery in the region, from stone entrance steps to a full scale Parthenon to a quiet iris garden. The tradeoff is that you're sharing the space with everyone else who happens to be there that day, there's no built in weather backup, and depending on the spot, a permit may officially be required for a ceremony (our permit guide breaks that down in more detail). If it rains, the backup plan is on you.

A simple way to think about it: if a guaranteed, private, weather proof setting matters more to you than saving money, a venue is usually worth it. If you're comfortable with a little unpredictability and would rather put your budget toward something else, like the honeymoon or the dress, a free spot can be just as meaningful.

Whichever way you lean, the officiant side of things doesn't change. I show up at any of these locations, or anywhere else in Middle Tennessee you have in mind, and handle your marriage license either way.
